Burnside was a township once upon a time situated in the sugar cane fields up the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. This was the first place I heard maskanda, South Africa’s very own variety of fingerstyle guitar known for its rapid polyphonic fingerpicking predominately played by our roaming Zulu minstrels. Burnside was also a window into a world ever-present in South Africa that I had only ever read about at that stage in my life. Despite their poor living conditions and lack of resources, the residents of Burnside knew better than anyone the importance of having a good time.
